French Word Games, “Untranslatable Arabic”, and Global English
Date: May 11, 2022, 20:00 - 22:00
In collaboration with the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT), Sheikh Zayed Book Award held a virtual research seminar entitled “French Word Games, “Untranslatable Arabic”, and Global English” with Michael Cooperson, SZBA 2021 translation winner and Professor of Arabic at University of California.
The seminar discussed Al-Hariri’s Impostures - a twelfth-century collection of fifty tales that has routinely been called untranslatable. Yet translators across the world succeeded in re-creating it in their languages.
